Excellence in Mentorship Workshop
The CBI hosted the first annual Excellence in Mentorship Workshop in June 2024 in partnership with Notre Dame's Department of Biological Sciences and the Harper Cancer Research Institute. During the three-hour workshop, 14 graduate students and one faculty member prepared to host a variety of audiences – high school students, undergraduate students, high school teachers – in their labs. The workshop focused on ways to meaningfully engage mentees in the research process.
Participants shared personal experiences with mentoring and heard from a panel of individuals who have been mentored during a research experience. They also practiced communicating their research to their different mentee audiences and discussed best practices and responsibilities for mentoring. The workshop covered guidelines for working with minors and non-ND participants. Attendees left with a packet of resources to support their mentoring this summer and beyond.
The Excellence in Mentorship Workshop is one of the existing ways CBI contributes to infrastructure for continued professional development to support the research efforts of faculty, graduate, and postdoctoral students.
